There are Three Critical Periods & One Maturity Stage for your newly hydroseeded lawn or repair area:
1. Germination Period:
Growth Height = 0 – 2 inches (5 – 30 days)
- Under ideal conditions some of the grasses may begin to germinate and grow in 5-10 days. Under less than ideal conditions the seed may take as long as 30 days to germinate. (Some grasses will even take up to 30 days to germinate under ideal conditions.) Begin watering the morning after the lawn is seeded. Water 2-3 times a day for 10-15 minutes every day until grass begins to germinate. The goal is to keep the entire area that was seeded moist without puddling. Tread lightly. Also, make sure to provide extra watering to areas where heat will reflect off buildings, fences and structures. The heat in these areas can be double what the rest of the lawn is experiencing.
2. New Growth Period:
Growth Height = 2-3 inches (20 – 45 days)
- After grass has begun to germinate and is between 2-3 inches in height you should adjust your watering schedule to 2-3 times per week for 15-30 minutes at a time. This will start to promote deep root growth. Around the 30 day mark, fertilize with a quality fertilizer with slow release Nitrogen to assist the plant in spreading out and filling in.
3. Maturing Period:
Growth Height = 3 ½ - 4 inches (40 – 60 days)
- When the new grass reaches 3 ½ - 4 inches in height you want to mow for the first time. Mow to a height of 3 inches.
- Be sure to have sharp blades on your mower to ensure a clean cut! A dull blade will damage the grass and could impede it's growth.
- You should only be taking off between ½ to 1 ½ inches when you mow. Check the height of your grass and the height of your mower with a ruler or measuring tape. Never take off more than 1/3 the height of your grass in a single mowing.
4. Mature Lawn Stage:
Weed Control & Fertilizing (90 – 120 days)
- Weed control & fertilizing must be delayed until the lawn reaches its maturity stage.
- This is a minimum of 90 days after the ‘installation’.
DO NOT SPRAY FOR WEEDS UNTIL THIS TIME!
There are Two Guidelines about how to care for your newly hydroseeded area:
A) Watering:
- Once your lawn is established, it will require a minimum 1-1 ½ inches of water a week (more if it is hot and dry). This should be checked with a rain gauge. As a general rule of thumb watering should be done at least 3 to 5 times a week for 20-40 minutes depending on water flow to get to the recommended amount. The idea here is to get the water to penetrate all the way through the root zone.
B) Mowing:
- Mowing should be done on a weekly basis (never taking off more than 1/3 the height of the grass).
- During the spring and early fall, you may have to mow more than once a week.
- Due to the differences in soil conditions and Ph balances, it is not uncommon to have small patches that do not germinate.
- Many of these areas will fill in when you begin mowing on a weekly basis. You must ensure that slow germinating areas are not caused by lack of water!
Apply a good quality fertilizer 3-4 times per year.
