Prepping your area for hydroseeding is fairly simple. We recommend a minimum of 4 to 6 inches of topsoil in order for proper germination, growth and sustainability.
Ideally, the area being prepped should have a texture to it once it is levelled to your satisfaction before having the hydroseeding applied. This will help the mulch adhere to the surface and further resist any erosion. The fluffier the topsoil, the better. Topsoil that has been rained on will get a polished surface and will naturally compact. If this happens, a light harrowing or hand raking to loosen up the soil will work.
Basically, have the area prepped for what you would want to be mowing on. Remove all rocks, sticks and debris ahead of time. The hydroseeding needs seed to soil contact to properly germinate. Anything that is in between the hydroseeding mulch and soil will act as a barrier to growth.
Also, if you plan to install underground sprinklers, you can do this ahead of time.
